The Pleasantview Chronicles: Behavior (pt. 2)--The Punyawong Family

FINALLY, I update. I had it in there (the cpu) but, likewise, I was too lazy to get it out...

PART 2
“Thanks for dropping me off, Pee Susie!” Nita stepped out of the car.
“Call me when you’re ready. I’ll be at the ice cream store.”
            “Okay. Maybe around six.”
“Don’t be too late. I know you still have homework to finish.”
Nita shut the door and waved to Susie’s Honda civic. As she walked to the designated meeting place, she realized how many families were at the park today.
There was the Jacques family having a barbeque. The Burb sisters were at the swings while their parents were nearby. Don Lothario and his daughters—Alyssa and Tiffany—were taking a walk with their dogs. The Poe family—without their son—was also setting up a barbeque.
She walked and walked, but finally spotted who she was looking for: Quentin Callaghan.
“Have you been waiting long?” Nita asked as she was approached by Quentin.
Quentin dimpled. “Of course not. I could never wait long enough for you.” Out of habit, he reached for her hand.
            She immediately drew back.
He gave her a questioning look. “What’s wrong?”
“I-I didn’t know that you thought I called you out on a date…”
The color drained from his face. “This isn’t a date?”
“Did you think it was?” Some form of pity developed in her stomach.
At first, it seemed as thought Quentin was truly apologetic. But, no. He instantly smiled. “Got yah.”
Nita pushed him a bit. “You know, I actually felt some pity for you.”
Quentin Callaghan had been a long friend of Nita, and her only connection to that person.
“So, want to give me the details on why you called me out today?”
“…I just didn’t want to be home.”
“Really, now? Does it have anything to do with that guy walking towards us?”
Nita froze as she slowly turned around. She instantly frowned and punched Quentin in the arm: Mr. Burb was walking towards them, but his intentions were on Amber and Lucy who were at the swings behind them.
            “You’re such an ass!”
“Watch your language, young missy.” Quentin smiled. “Seriously, does it have anything to do with him?”
            “Who?” Nita quickly looked around.
            “So…you are waiting for someone.”
            “I-I’m not.”
            “You so are.”
            “…No, I’m not.”
“Then, maybe someone’s looking for you?” He motioned towards the bathroom, where two guys were talking. “That guy keeps looking at you.”
Nita looked towards the bathrooms. She tensed. It was him. She quickly turned back around when he began to look towards her.
            “He’s staring.”
Nita shook her head. “Let’s go somewhere else, Quentin.”
            “Oh, my god, he’s walking.”
“L-let’s go to the tree house. Come on, come on!” She started pulling Quentin’s hand towards the tree house.
            “Nita? Nita! Wait!”
Quentin didn’t move. “You’ve got to face him.”
“Oh, screw you!” Nita started running towards the tree house. She climbed the tree house and swung the monkey bars until she landed about seven yards away from where she was. She jumped off and started running again. Luckily, she was on the track team for Pleasantview Intermediate School.
Finally, she ended up at the track field at Plesantview High School. She saw the baseball shed and ran to hide there. Hopefully, she had run far away. Far away from him.
After catching her breath, she took out her phone and telephoned Quentin.
            “Yeah?” he answered.
            “Sorry for leaving you.”
“Dude, he’s still here. He’s looking all over for you.”
            Nita was silent.
“I think he really needs to talk to you about something. You should just talk to him, honestly.”
            “Quentin, you don’t understand.”
He sighed. “I had a feeling you’d say that. Well, you can stay a coward for the rest of your life if you want to. I don’t know what’s going on in your mind, but you just got to know that he’s honestly looking for you. Whatever issue you have to settle, please, just settle it. For your own good.”
            “Thanks.”
            “Whatever. Bye.”
“Talk to you later.” She pressed the hang up button. With one long sigh, she wrapped her arms around her legs. She didn’t know what she should do. For a moment, she thought of what she should do, but nothing came to mind. Finally, she picked up her phone. “Hello? Pee Susie? Can you pick me up? I’m at Pleasantview High’s track.”

As Susie paid for her ice cream, she wondered why her sister decided to get picked up.
            “Three seventy-nine.”
Susie reached into her wallet, only to find out she had three dollars. “Er…” She looked at the guy. “I only have three dollars…”
The guy looked at her and smiled. “Well, now, you’re short seventy-nine cents.” He looked around and leaned forward towards her. “Don’t worry about it.”
            “Are-are you sure?”
            “Of course.”
            “I-I’ll bring it back tomorrow.”
“Sure. If you’d like to. You don’t have to bring it back at all.”
“No! I-I’ll bring it back tomorrow.”
He smiled, his charming smile. “Sure.”
            “Your name again?”
            “Stephen. And yours?”
            “Susie.”
“Okay then. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Susie thanked him once more and walked out of the ice cream parlor. As she was approaching her car, she heard the ice cream parlor door open again.
            “Ah, wait, Susie!”
Susie turned around and saw Stephen coming towards her.
“I’ll be here after three. If you came here before, then you won’t get me and then whoever you get won’t know what was going on.”
            “Oh, thanks for telling me.”
In a more awkward and slightly cuter way, he began to run his hand through his hair. “I-I don’t want you to think that I’m trying to pester you or anything if you think I’m being too pestering. I don’t want you to think I’m trying to pick you up or anything…But-but, if I were to, then I would ‘cause you’re…um…you’re pretty.” He was already blushing and murmuring. He instantly cursed himself as Susie was giggling. “I-I’m sorry. My mouth has a mind of its own…”
            “Don’t worry. I like it.”
He dared to look up at her. It was probably then that some secret was exchanged between them through their shared smile.

It seemed as if everyone was in a bad mood at the Punyawong house. Well, everyone but Susie, who was always in a better mood then her family.
While Lee loaded her alto-saxophone into Susie’s trunk, Ali and Nick were already sitting in the car. They had a fight the previous day and they wouldn’t even look at each other. Nita came out of the house, her back-pack drooping from her arm. She usually wore it on her back—letting it droop signified that she wasn’t too uppity today. Lee finished loading her saxophone and unconsciously slammed the trunk down. Her sudden action caused her younger siblings to look at her.
Susie waved good-bye as she came out of the house. “Is my stuff in the trunk, Nalee?”
            “Yeah.”
Susie noticed the fowl attitude Lee was displaying. “What’s up?”
            “Nothing.”
            “You have practice today?”
            “Yeah.”
“So, I don’t have to wait?”
            “Yeah.”
Susie shrugged as she and Lee simultaneously got into the car. “Seatbelts, everyone.”
“Don’t touch me!” Ali nearly screamed.
“You’re in my way!” Nick replied.
            “Guys, what’s wrong?” Susie asked.
“None of your business!” they replied simultaneously.
Sensing a stronger force at work, Susie ignored them and started off for Pleasantview Elementary first. Ten minutes later, the two youngest siblings were struggling to get out.
“Don’t touch me!” Ali yelled again.
“Here!” Nick threw her bag onto the street.
“Hey!” She grabbed his bag and threw it onto the other side of the road.
Nick was so angered that his face turned completely red as he trotted out of the car to retrieve his bag.
Nita reached over and closed the door. Immediately, Susie drove off to Pleasantview Intermediate.
Lee noticed how Nita cringed when she opened the door.
“I’ll pick you up later?” Susie asked.
            “N-no…I have track today.”
            “Oh, okay. See you tonight.”
Nita shut the door and Susie drove off once again.
At the high school, while Lee brought out her saxophone case, Susie noticed Ashley Carson pass by without even waiting for her best friend—Lee. Lee didn’t acknowledge her presence, either.
As the two sisters walked up the steps to the front doors, the two came across Chase. Susie noted that both sophomores tensed at the sight of one another. Lee immediately looked the other way, as did Chase. Lee was about to walk away, but Susie grabbed her shirt.
            “Good morning, Chase,” Susie greeted.
“M-morning, Susie.” He glanced towards Lee’s directions. “M-morning, Lee,” he murmured.
When Susie let Lee go—expecting that she would stay—Lee made way for the band room. Chase watched her go; when she disappeared, he returned to looking at the ground.
“Something wrong between the three of you?”
            “Three?” He looked up.
“Ashley and Lee didn’t say anything to each other, either…”
            Chase sighed. “I-I don’t know…”
“So, is there something wrong between the two of you?”
Chase’s complexion darkened. “We-we had a fight on Saturday.”
            “A bad one, I guess.”
“…She didn’t call me the other day.”
That meant the fight was really bad. Usually, Lee, Ashley, and Chase would have a three-way conversation every Saturday or Sunday night. Ever since they were able to have cell phones, they called each other every Saturday or Sunday night and would spend an hour or so just talking.
            “Did you do something wrong?”
Chase tensed and his eyes widened.
Susie had her answer. “Well, Lee won’t be mad for you too long.”
“I hope so,” he whispered under his breath. “I-I’ll be going now.”
“Okay. See you at lunch.” Susie watched as Chase walked down the long corridor. His stance was much hunched; whatever was troubling him was troubling him with many troubles.

“Hey, what’s wrong with you and Chase?” a familiar band friend—Jillian—asked as she took a seat next to Lee in their shared history class.
Lee shook her head. “Had a fight.”
“Must’ve been a big one…You guys aren’t talking.” She motioned towards Chase—who also had the same history class.
When Lee looked up to look at him, she immediately looked back down: he was also looking at her.
“Is it about Ashley?” Jill whispered.
            “…k-kind of.”
Jill sighed. “So, he’s still not over her.”
            Lee slowly nodded.
“So, what was the fight about this time?”
            “…Stuff…”
            “What kind of stuff?”
            “…Serious stuff…”
Jill knew she shouldn’t answer. “Well, today, you don’t have to think too much on it. You have band practice…and, afterwards, you’ll have drum line with that cute Jeffrey Sanders.”
Lee forced herself to smile. “Jeff isn’t cute.”
“He IS hot. Everyone agrees that he’ll be nominated to homecoming court. And, he’s such a nice guy, too…”
Lee nodded her head. “But, he’s only a friend.”
“For now. Don’t think I haven’t seen the two of you afterschool…”
            “It’s because we’re both in drum-line.”
Jill smirked. “That’s what you say. I bet he’d say something different. He looks at you with those eyes, sometimes…”
“Say what you want, but I’ll only ever think of him as a friend.”
“I wonder what would happen if he asked you to go with him to the Halloween Party at Club Heat next week…”
            “I wouldn’t go. I never go.”
“But, if he does ask, then you have to go. Oh, then we could go and pick out a dress for you.”
Lee rolled her eyes. The bell rang, thus ending third period. Lee and Jill were the first ones out. As Lee and Jill headed to Lee’s locker, they ran into the infamous Jeffrey Sanders.
“Hey Lee. Jill.” His charming smile was enough to melt a person. He easily leaned against the nearer lockers. He crossed his arms.
“Where’s your posse?” Lee asked with a smirk. She opened her locker and got out her Biology notes.
“I ditched them. Ready for tonight? Masterson wants the formation perfect.”
Lee sighed and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, whatever. Honestly, he’s a beast.”
Jeff nodded. He looked down for a moment and looked back at her. “Hey, Lee…?”
            “Yeah?”
            “…You doing anything next Saturday?”
            Lee and Jill froze.
“Because there’s that Halloween Party at Club Heat and I was wondering if you wanted to go…with me…”

“Hey there,” Dirk greeted as he met Susie by the water fountains. He smiled charmingly. “AP Physics?”
            Susie smiled. “Yep. With Jensen.”
“I’m going that way. Want me to walk with you?”
“If you want to.” The bubbling feelings drifted upwards like someone had popped open a bottle of champagne in Susie’s stomach. For the first few seconds, neither one said anything. Suddenly, he broke the silence.
            “I-is physics hard?”
“Well…if you’re good at math, then no.”
“Oh, then it is hard...if you’re doing it…”
She giggled. “Are you going to be stereotypical and say that all Asians are good at math?”
“N-no, that’s not what I meant!” He panicked. “I-if anything, our valedictorian is white!”
“I’m just kidding with you.” With a slightly more teasing way, she added, “But the valedictorian at Warburton and Eckhart is Chinese…”
            How did she know that?
As if reading his face, she smiled. “I’ve got friends everywhere.”
The silence around them was awkward.
Eventually, Dirk spoke up before coming to Jensen’s AP Physics. “A-are you doing anything Saturday?”
Her eyes sparkled. She shook her head.
“Well…then, were you going to go to the Halloween Party at Club Heat?”
She blushed and he thought it was so adorable. “W-well…maybe.” They stopped in front of Jensen’s class and she waved to him before heading into the tormenting hell of math and science.
Dirk stood in front of the classroom, too dumbfounded to move. Was that an invitation to ask her out to the party?
Still in front of the class, Dirk spotted Lilith coming towards him.
Susie poked her head out, a smile on her face. She spotted Lilith and Dirk talking, and the smile disappeared as she heard what Lilith had to say to her ex-boyfriend.
“Dirk, I want to talk about us…”

Drum-line was out playing on the field this afternoon. While on break, Jeff set down his drums next to Lee and took a seat next to her on the bleachers.
“Do you have an answer for me?” he asked.
            She sighed. “No.”
A look of disappointment appeared on his face. “Really…”
“How do I say this…?” She had a ponderous look on her face. “You’re nice and all, Jeff, but-.”
            “There’s someone else…”
She shook her head. “I just don’t like going to parties.”
“Ri-ight…” He played with his hands while peering off into the far distance. “Hm, varsity baseball.”
Lee looked at him. “…What about it?”
“Nothing. They’re just playing over there. Damn, that Thompson guy’s good, huh? A rookie…I think he won our last game for us.”
Lee didn’t want anyone else to know about her problems. “He’s alright.” She stood up, dusting invisible particles off of her pants. “So, let’s get back to practicing.” She helped him up.
The two donned their drums and walked to the practicing spot. Director Masterson conducted the group with preciseness.
For the next hour and a half, Lee didn’t see that there was someone who was watching her. It wasn’t Jeff Sanders.
When practice was finished, Lee packed up her instruments and hiked the bleachers. She flopped onto the bleachers’ seats and stayed there for a moment. It was nearly five and the sun was setting at a wonderful angle. She didn’t know that she wasn’t alone.
He climbed the steps to her and stood before her. “Lee.”
She opened her eyes, but instantly wished she hadn’t.
“We need to talk,” Chase began. “I think I-.”
“I have nothing to say.” She sat up and gathered her things.
“At least let me help you,” Chase replied when he saw her struggling between her saxophone case, her backpack, and her drums.
“I-I’m fine.” She eventually placed everything on her shoulders, only to almost fall on her back. He caught her.
            “You need my help.”
            “I don’t need your anything.”
“Look, I can understand why you’re mad-.”
“If you can understand, then you shouldn’t make me angrier.”
“We can’t go on like this.” He sighed. “The three of us.”
“Well, you shouldn’t have made it complicated.”
“If you would just listen to me-!”
“Why should I? I don’t want to listen to a criminal!”
“…There’s always two sides to the story. At least hear mine first.”
Even with this offer, she knew she couldn’t. “I don’t want to listen to anything.” She picked up her things and began walking away.
He, though, followed, assured that they had to talk today. “We’re better than this; we’re deeper than this, Lee.”
She made no attempt of a reply.
“You know everything about me. You know I wouldn’t do that.”
Do I? I barely know myself, so how could I possibly know everything about you?
“…I-I don’t want to lose the only person I can trust.”
She turned to him. “Well, you have.” A knife twisted in her heart. “I don’t want to be your friend. I wish I didn’t know you.”
“Why? Why do you hate me so much?”
Because I love you. “Because you hurt Ashley.”
            “It’s more than Ashley.”
Yes, it’s because I love you. “No, it’s all about Ashley.”
“You and I are deeper than Ashley.”
Why can’t you see that I love you so much? “Well, Ashley and I are much deeper because we’re both girls. It’s something you could never understand.” She turned around and spotted Jeff heading over towards them.
“Hey.” Jeff nodded to Chase. “Want a ride home?” He smiled at Lee. “Just thought I’d offer.”
She smiled and tried to hide the sadness, the love, the hatred that she felt for the nearby person. “With all of my things?”
            “I have a van.”
            “So, you’re driving?”
“You can go home with me, Lee…” Chase’s attempt was weak.
“I-I think I’ll go with Jeff,” Lee admitted. “He and I have to agree on a place to meet.”
            “Meet?” Jeff asked. “For what?”
Lee knew she would regret what she was going to say, but she had to say it. She needed to push herself away from Chase. “Oh? Did you forget that I agreed to go with you to the Halloween Party at Club Heat?”
